Nearly double the number of young adults under 55 are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer today compared to a decade ago, and more are dying from the disease each year, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).
In the United States, it is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women.
The cancer starts in the colon or the rectum. Most begin as a polyp, a growth in the tissue. This cancer may be referred to as colon cancer or rectal cancer.
