Exploring Medical Language, 12th Edition – Now in Print for 40 Years

Exploring Medical Language, 12th Edition

“I have never enjoyed learning so much; I am dreading coming to the end of the book.  The pictures, numerous exercises, flashcards, and online resources, including games, have all been wonderful tools for aiding memory and retention in a fun and interesting way.”

Exploring Medical Language 12th Edition

This former student effectively highlights why “Exploring Medical Language” has been a leading medical terminology textbook for 40 years, having sold over 2 million copies.

I co-authored “Exploring Medical Language” with Winnie Starr in 1985 when the Mosby publishing company took a bold risk by offering us a contract.

At that time, there were few such textbooks available for classroom adoption, and we were frustrated that they did not effectively address medical terms constructed from word parts for learning purposes.  We wanted the chance to improve this, and we succeeded.

This unique approach to learning has remained one of the textbook’s standout features.

About the Textbook

Exploring Medical Language, 12th Editionis a workbook and textbook that offers exercises to facilitate the development of a solid understanding of medical terminology.
Organized by body system, medical terms are divided into two categories, each with its own learning style.
1) Words built from word parts,
2) Words NOT built from word parts.
Fun and engaging exercises help you first learn word parts (paper flashcards are included) and then learn how to combine the parts into full medical terms that make sense. Words not built from word parts use recall exercises.
For additional practice, the companion website offers games, activities, pronunciation and spelling practice, electronic flashcards, and videos.
This learning package helps you develop fluency in medical language and communicate effectively in healthcare settings.
