Medical Directional Terms
Medical directional terms are used to describe the location of pain, skin lesions, surgical location, and so forth.
The terms are based on the anatomical position:
- body erect
- palm of hands forward
- thumbs away from the body
- feet slightly apart
An example of directional terms in use: Pain was felt in the posterior portion of the left leg and radiated to the distal lateral portion of the extremity.
